Why do students sometimes do great on the study guide but flop the test? Why do students sometimes struggle to apply the lessons they were clearly taught to new classes and situations outside of school? These are important questions regarding learning transfer that I researched as part of my graduate program, which included conducting an in-depth study on transfer at Sturgis High School. I would love to share my findings, hear some cross-curricular discussions, and see how we can more purposefully teach with transfer in mind! In this session, we will explore the different types of learning transfer, discuss the complexities and challenges of transfer at Sturgis specifically, and learn about researched strategies to improve transfer within and between learning sites. Teachers will then have work time to collaborate on lessons that incorporate these best strategies.
